Picture
"Ariel" is an impressionist watercolor inspired by a hornet killing a cicada in mid-flight.  This work was completed in summer 2014 in Florida.  In the deep south cicadas are called "July Flies".  They make a horrible noise to go along with the horrible heat and humidity of July, so it's difficult to feel much sympathy for the plight of the cicada.
